Mastodons Score Three in the 9th to Defeat Anderson

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The IPFW baseball team defeated Anderson on Monday night by the final score of 7-5. The Mastodons broke a 4-4 tie in the top of the ninth inning to even their overall record at 11-11.
The top of the order came up big on Monday night for IPFW as the top four players in the lineup recorded at least two hits against the Ravens. Malcolm White's second hit of the game came in the top of the ninth inning with two outs to spark the comeback win.
White hit a double to left field that sent Caleb Fenimore home, giving IPFW a slim 5-4 advantage. White moved to third on a balk and then Tyler Shepherd joined him on base by drawing a walk. Shepherd easily stole second base with two outs and then Kristian Gayday blew the game open with a two RBI double scoring both runners.
Anderson hit a solo home run with one gone in the bottom of the inning, but Connor Lawhead held off the charge as IPFW picked up the Monday victory.
Steve Danielak got the start for IPFW and threw the first five innings of the game. The junior struck out two and walked three. He issued seven hits which resulted in two runs, but neither of the runs were earned.
Connor McLaughlin got just over two innings of work in against Anderson. The Ravens scored two runs off one hit versus McLaughlin before Lawhead entered the game to earn his first win of the season.
Gayday and Lucas Salerno each had three hits on Monday and Tyler Shepherd was all over the base paths scoring three runs for the Mastodons. Newcomers Brandon Soat and Steve Lowden each came up with a double helping IPFW record 15 hits and the win.
IPFW will begin the Summit League portion of their 2013 schedule with a trip to Omaha this weekend to play two against the Mavericks on April 5.
