DAYTON, Ohio – Five different players hit a homerun on Wednesday night as the IPFW baseball team went on the road to defeat Dayton by the final score of 18-10. The Mastodons are now 13-14 overall as they prepare for South Dakota State on Friday in the home opener.
IPFW crushed Dayton early in the game as they scored four runs in the second, five in the third and five more in the fourth. A three-run fifth inning and a single run in the eighth would give IPFW their highest scoring run total since the 2010 season when they defeated Chicago State by the final of 21-6.
Kevin Wirth, Tyler Shepherd, Kristian Gayday, Brandon Soat, and Clay Hathaway all homered in the win and oddly enough all five players also came up with a double.
Wirth was the first Mastodon to hit the long ball as his three-RBI bomb to left field made the score 4-1. Hathaway scored the first run of the game to tie the contest at 1-1 after an RBI single from Caleb Fenimore.
IPFW didn't slow down as Shepherd's two-run homer increased the lead in the third inning. Gayday added an RBI double and Steve Lowden was also involved with an RBI single to left field.
The fourth inning was just as productive as the third as IPFW scored five more runs to grab a comfortable lead. It was Gayday this time that delivered a three-run home run over the fence in left which allowed Evan VanSumeren and Lucas Salerno to score increasing the lead to 14-1.
The bats stayed hot in the fifth as Hathaway doubled to lead off the inning. Soat followed in the lineup and hit a two-run shot over the fence in right. The final run of the inning came in off a Shepherd sacrifice fly.
They Flyers generated some runs late with one in the sixth, two in the seventh, four in the eighth and one in the ninth, but the damage had been done as IPFW cruised to an 18-10 win. Every starter on the team recorded at least two hits and Gayday led the way with four RBI's.
Nate White got the start on the mound for IPFW and walked away with four solid innings. The sophomore struck out three while limiting the Flyers to just two earned runs. He was replaced by Danny Tursell who picked up his second win of the year and is now 2-2 overall. Tursell walked three batters which resulted in a run, but he only allowed one hit while striking out one in two innings of work. Kyle Sorensen and Travis Reboulet finished the game for IPFW out of the bullpen.
IPFW will look to keep this momentum as South Dakota State and North Dakota State visit Mastodon Field this weekend in Summit League play. The Jackrabbits will play a doubleheader against IPFW at noon on Friday and the Bison will do the same on Sunday.
