Groninger's Mark Pushes 'Dons to Eight after Day One of Summit Championships

KELLER, Texas - IPFW sophomore Jacob Groninger carded an opening-round 70, two-under par, tying for third in the field, as the Mastodons sit in eighth place after the first day of the 2013 Summit League Championships.
The Mastodons, with a first-round 315, are within 10 strokes of fifth place in the field. Kansas City leads the way after the first round with a team score of 295, while Western Illinois sits second with a 298. South Dakota carded a 299, with North Dakota State recording a 303. South Dakota State (306), Oakland (310), IUPUI (311) are all within striking distance for the Mastodons, while Omaha (316) sits a stroke behind.
Groninger's 70 sits third in the field, behind only a pair of first-round 69's from Kansas City's No. 1 and No. 3 golfers in the lineup. Freshman Oliver Gibson is tied for 24th with a 78, while senior Bruno Carvalho carded an 83, good for 37th. Dan Wert's 84 has him tied for 38th to round out the scoring four for IPFW, with Drake Devereux sitting 44th in the field and fifth on the squad with a 91.
The Mastodons head back to the course for the second of three rounds, as the Mastodons are paired with IUPUI and Omaha in the first five tee times of the afternoon.
