Mavericks Sweep Mastodons in Saturday Doubleheader

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW baseball team took two losses on Saturday afternoon to the Omaha Mavericks. The Mastodons took a tough 2-0 loss in game one of the doubleheader and then dropped a 9-0 decision in the nightcap. IPFW is now 19-22 overall with a 7-11 mark in Summit League competition.
Tyler Shepherd had a great day from the plate in the opener going 3-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base. Evan VanSumeren went 2-for-3 and hits from Steve Lowden and Markus Kalber would round out the game for IPFW.
Ryan Keele and Clayton Taylor each recorded RBI's in the first game, helping Omaha claim the 2-0 victory. Taylor doubled down the right field line to generate the first run in the bottom of the second inning and Keele made it 2-0 with a double down the left field line in the third.
Chuck Weaver threw a complete game for IPFW in game one. The senior stuck out five batters and only issued one walk. He allowed five hits, but just one earned run.
The Mavericks scored runs in six of the nine innings in game two starting with a solo run in the top of the first followed by two more in the third. Alex Schultz scored off a wild pitch in the top of the fourth and three-straight singles gave UNO two more runs in the fifth.
A big seventh inning from Omaha stretched the lead to 8-0 and the final run of the game came off an RBI single from Keele as the Mavericks wrapped up a 9-0 win.
Clay Hathaway went 2-for-4 in game two. Other Mastodons to record a hit included Lowden, VanSumeren, and Kevin Wirth.
IPFW will end the weekend series with a single game against Omaha on Sunday, May 5. Prior to first pitch, the IPFW baseball program will recognize the 2013 senior class of Clay Hathaway, Jason Kalber, Markus Kalber, Travis Reboulet, Danny Tursell and Chuck Weaver.
