FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Andie Lazzerini scored twice in just over a minute span, as the IPFW Mastodons record a 2-2 exhibition draw with the Western Michigan Broncos at the Hefner Soccer Complex on Saturday evening.
Lazzerini took passes from Delia Soucie and Meg Brennan to turn a 2-0 halftime deficit into a 2-2 tie score less than 15 minutes into the second period.
Ali Russo's goal for Western Michigan was not only her team's first goal of the exhibition season after falling to Michigan 5-0 on August 13, but was also the first goal allowed in an exhibition match for IPFW in over 350 minutes (354:32). The last time IPFW had allowed a goal in an exhibition game was August 3, 2012 in the 18th minute of the exhibition opener a season ago against Detroit.
Western Michigan kept the tempo forward for the majority of the half, as the Mastodons were held without a shot attempt for the first period of the contest. The Broncos added a second goal with one second remaining in the first half, when Liz Abro led Mackenzie Barber into the goal, taking WMU to a 2-0 halftime advantage.
Lazzerini got a pass into open space from Soucie, beating Western Michigan goalkeeper Michelle Watson 57:56 into the contest, before beating a diving keeper off a pass from Brennan 59 minutes into the game (pictured above), knotting the score at one apiece.
IPFW rebounded to take eight shots in the second half, five of those on goal. Sam Pavlika and Kiley Dunning split time evenly in goal, Pavlika picking up three saves, while Dunning had a pair.
The Mastodons open their regular season with five straight home matches, opening on August 23 at 5:30 p.m. against the Wright State Raiders.
