FORT WAYNE, Ind. - A Wright State goal with 2:46 remaining on the clock in double overtime sent IPFW to 0-1 on the season in heartbreaking fashion on Friday night in both squads' season opener.
The Mastodons took 10 shots in the loss, while Hailey Mariotti scored the team's lone goal in the game's 27th minute, as she was assisted by Delia Soucie.
The match started defensively from both ends, as each team was feeling the other out, before the Mastodons were able to clear out the first shot attempt of the contest over 17 minutes into the contest.
In the game for less than two minutes, Mariotti scored the first goal of her collegiate regular season career - she scored the team's only goal in the 1-0 exhibition win over Detroit - to put the Mastodons ahead 1-0.
IPFW kept the pressure on, taking three more shots over the final 20 minutes of the period, as the 'Dons took a 1-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Wright State knotted the match at one goal apiece 24 minutes into the second stanza when Emilie Fillion beat IPFW keeper Sam Pavlika.
The final 20 minutes, plus the next ten of the first overtime were scoreless, as the teams combined for just one shot attempt in the first overtime period.
IPFW had its chances in the second overtime, as the squad took two shots in the first six and a half minutes; however, the Raiders were able to counter an IPFW attempt for a breakaway goal from Kalee Thompson, giving the Raiders the 2-1 win.
Pavlika had a match-high six goalie saves, while her counterpart Brooke McCurdy had four saves and one goal allowed.
The Mastodons return to action on Sunday, August 25 when the squad hosts the Northern Iowa Panthers at 1 p.m. at the Hefner Soccer complex.
