HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - In a defensive battle that saw almost twice as many fouls than shots (24 fouls, 14 shots), the Marshall Thundering Herd was able to squeeze across a goal in the 46th minute to claim a 1-0 victory in the final match of the Qdoba Invitational, hosted by Marshall.
IPFW had four shots in the loss, one each from Jacob Murphy, Scott Williams, Austin West, and Stephen Danielian. Freshman goalkeeper Raphael Kotzock picked up four saves, while allowing just the solitary goal.
The teams opened the game in a highly defensive first half with just five total shots, one of those from IPFW (Danielian).
Minutes into the second half, the Thundering Herd was able to find the back of the net when Andrew Ferguson sent the ball across the box, where in a jumble, Trevor Starcher was able to get a foot on it and send it past Kotzock for the day's only goal - as Oakland and St. Francis (Pa.) played to a scoreless tie in the opener.
IPFW threatened late, including a through pass from Corey Tom to a streaking Jacob Murphy, whose equalizing shot missed just wide, and the Mastodons would not get another shot in the contest, as Marshall held on for the 1-0 victory.
The Mastodons return to action on Friday, September 20, when the squad faces off against Wisconsin in the first day of the UIC Soccer Classic.
