CHICAGO - The IPFW Mastodons fell to a strong UIC squad in the UIC Invitational on Sunday afternoon by a 4-0 score.
IPFW (0-7-1) was out-shot 17-2 in the game, with Jacob Murphy and Kyle Ackerman picking up one shot apiece. Raphael Kotzock picked up two saves for the Mastodons, while his counterpart, Andrew Putna of UIC (5-2-1), did not have a save in picking up the shutout.
Earning a spot on the All-Tournament team was defender Alex Kemp and midfielder Drake Bowers.
UIC wasted little time in jumping out of the gate, scoring in the ninth minute of the game, before adding another score just under six minutes later. Trailing 2-0 after 15 minutes, the Mastodon defense held its ground for the remainder of the half, as the 'Dons went into the locker room at halftime trailing 2-0.
Fourteen minutes into the second half, the Flames added to their lead with Jesus Torres' second goal of the match, before the final insurance tally with just under 10 minutes remaining before the end of the game.
The Mastodons return to action on Saturday, September 28, when the squad travels to Tulsa, Okla. to face off in the squad's 2013 Summit League opener against the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles in an 8 p.m. kickoff, which also caps off a six-match road swing for IPFW.
