TULSA, Okla. - In a match postponed from the night before because of soggy field conditions, the IPFW Mastodons held a lead through the final seconds of regulation, but fell in the squad's 2013 Summit League opener to the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles by a 2-1 score in overtime as the Golden Eagles scored with three seconds left in regulation, and then a minute into overtime to claim the narrow victory.
IPFW (0-8-1) had 15 shots in the game, eight of those on goal, while Oral Roberts (3-4-1) had 18 shots, nine on goal.
The Mastodons and Golden Eagles played through a physical first half which saw 11 total shots and 16 fouls.
The second half opened the same, until IPFW's Jose Rodriguez found the back of the net with 8:02 remaining on the regulation clock, putting the Mastodons ahead 1-0.
Holding onto their 1-0 advantage with just five seconds remaining in regulation, the IPFW was called for a foul inside of the goalie box, giving the Golden Eagles a chance at a penalty kick. Edgardo Mira's penalty kick attempt was saved by Mastodon goalkeeper Raphael Kotzock; however, the ball bounced back to Mira, who rebounded his own attempt two and scored as just two seconds had come off the clock, knotting the score at one goal apiece with three seconds remaining in the game.
One minute into the overtime session, Matt Rogers found the back of the net providing the golden-goal victory.
Rodriguez and Corey Tom each had five shots for IPFW, while Jacob Murphy had three and Kyle Ackerman and Stephen Danielian one apiece. Kotzock had seven saves for the Mastodons, giving up the two goals in 91 minutes of action.
The Mastodons return home to the friendly turf of the Hefner Soccer Complex on Tuesday evening, when the squad hosts the Detroit Titans at 6 p.m.
