Valparaiso Edges out 'Dons 1-0

VALPARAISO, Ind. - In their first road match of the 2013 season, the IPFW women's soccer team fell victim to a solitary first-half goal, as the Mastodons dropped a 1-0 non-conference battle to the Valparaiso Crusaders on Sunday evening.
IPFW and Valparaiso each took 10 shots, with four of IPFW's shots being on goal, and just two of Valparaiso's. Valparaiso had six corner kicks to IPFW's two, with IPFW picking up a dozen fouls to the Crusaders' eight.
The game's only goal came in the 19th minute when Tara Ellis put a free kick into the box, where it found the head of Hailey Chmela, who put it into the goal at the far post, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead.
In the second half the Mastodons out-shot Valparaiso 6-4, but could not find the back of the net, as the early goal held for the remaining 71 minutes.
Sam Pavlika had one save and allowed just the one goal, while Valparaiso's Kristen Manski had four saves. Gaby Romo, Mayson Whitman, and Sydney Hoareau each had two shots for IPFW, while Victoria Pepper, Tessa Edwards, Ashlyn Perry, and Maya Reyes each had one shot attempt.
The Mastodons return to action on Friday, September 13, when the squad travels to West Lafayette, Ind. to take on the Purdue Boilermakers.
