Scouting the Mavericks
Omaha is coming on a 75-51 loss on the road to South Dakota. Lanese Bough had 10 points and five rebounds for the Mavs. Sami Pawlak added nine points, four rebounds, an assist, block and steal - all in the second half. Taijhe Kelly had seven points and four rebounds. The Mavs forced a season-high 23 turnovers by USD, but connected on just 1-of-10 from 3-point range and 8-of-14 (57.1 percent) from the free throw line.
Omaha is a very young team with just three letter winners returning from a season ago. Seven of the 10 Mavericks who have played this season are first-year Division I players - five freshmen and two junior transfers. Head coach Brittany Lange was named the interim head coach on Oct. 2 and then named Omaha's full-time head coach on Dec. 31. Omaha is in its third year as a reclassifying Division I and second year in The Summit League. UNO is ineligible to participate in the Summit League tournament or the NCAA Tournament.
All-Time Series
The two teams have split both meetings last season, Omaha's first as a member of the Summit League. Prior to the Mavericks joining, the two squads had never met. Both teams won on their home court, with the Mavs taking the first meeting 60-50 on January 5. The 'Dons came back to the Gates Center and defeated Omaha 51-46. Amanda Hyde had 18 points and seven rebounds in that game as IPFW never trailed.
Elite Company...
Entering action this week, Amanda Hyde averages 23.3 points per game, but she does more than just shoot. Hyde's 4.6 assists per game ranks her fifth in the Summit League and puts her among elite company in the NCAA. Hyde is just one of four players in Division I women's basketball whom averages at least 20.0 points and 4.5 assists per game. The only other players entering the week are Odyssey Sims of Baylor, Eilis O'Connor of UMKC and Jennifer Schlott of Utah State. If you add rebounds, Hyde and O'Connor are the only players to average 20.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.5 assists.
Three-Point Streak...
The IPFW Mastodons have made a 3-point field goal in 454 straight contests, a stretch that ranks as the third longest active streak in NCAA Division I. Iowa State's streak is at the top of the list by making a 3-point field goal in 600 consecutive games. Sam Houston State is the only other team head of IPFW with 553 after Connecticut had their streak snapped vs. Notre Dame in the Big East Tournament last year at 505 games.
