Men's Basketball Hosts Final Non-Conference Battle of Season

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - IPFW welcomes the Kalamazoo Hornets for the Mastodons' final non-conference game of the 2013-14 season, as the squad looks to improve to 12-5 on the season for the first time since 1992-93.

In the loss, Mark Ghafari scored a game-high 38 points while pulling down eight rebounds and dishing out four assists. Adam Peters added a dozen points for the Hornets, with Carter Goetz scoring eight off of the bench. Kalamazoo was out-rebounded 50-to-43 in the loss, and shot just 35.7 percent from the field and 30.0 percent (6-of-20) from long range.
Leading the way offensively for the Hornets on the season has been senior guard Ghafari, who has scored 25 or more points six times. He averages 28.8 points per game, second in NCAA Division III. His total stands behind only the 44.6 point per game average of Jack Taylor of Grinnell, who earlier this season scored 109 points in a game against Crossroads College.
Ghafari also leads the team in field goal makes (79), field goal attempts (166), three-point makes (37), three-point attempts (88), free throws made (93), free throws attempted (114), and is third on the team with 51 rebounds.
Peters stands second on the team in scoring average at 16.9 points per game, as the duo combine to average 45.7 points per game, over half of the team's 82.9 point per game average. Chase Baysdell averages a team-best 6.8 rebounds per game while scoring 7.5 per contest, while Carl Ghafari has dished out a team-leading 26 assists and also leading the team with 15 steals.

THREE-YEAR OPEN
Head coach Tony Jasick is 38-41 in his career at IPFW, and his 38 wins and .481 winning percentage each stand as the third-best three-year start by a coach in program history. Below are the eight IPFW head coach's first three seasons sorted by total wins.
MID-MAJOR RANKING
Last week, for the first time in program history, the IPFW men's basketball team has appeared in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25, sitting at 25th in the poll. After climbing to as high as 23 last week, the Mastodons stand in the "Also Receiving Votes" area this week.
FAST START
IPFW's 11-5 start this season is tied for the fifth-best 16-game start in program history, and tied for the best start in IPFW's NCAA Division I era.
BALANCING ACT
This season, IPFW has employed a balanced offensive attack that has seen eight different players lead the team in scoring at least once in the team's 15 games, with six players reaching the 20-point plateau.
STARTING STRONG
IPFW head coach Tony Jasick used the same starting lineup: Pierre Bland, Isaiah McCray, Joe Edwards, Michael Kibiloski, and Steve Forbes; for each of the first 15 games of this season, the longest season-opening stretch of games for the same starting five. The first time there was a different starting lineup was on January 2 at Bowling Green.
DRAFTED STAR
Former Mastodon standout Frank Gaines was been selected with the first pick in the second round by the Maine Red Claws in the 2013 NBA Development League draft. In 12 games with the Red Claws, Gaines is averaging 17.2 points per game, which ranks second on his squad and 21st in the D-League. In his last game, a win over Delaware, Gaines went for a D-League career-high 33 points, hitting 17-of-20 free throws, and pulling down five rebounds. The Red Claws are 6-6 on the season, as Gaines has hit 43.9% of his three-point attempts, and 44.2% of his field goals this season.
IPFW vs the MICHIGAN INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION
IPFW has played 37 games all-time against teams currently in the MIAA, including 24 times against Tri-State/Trine.
