Mastodons Upended 2-0 at Eastern Illinois

CHARELSTON, Ill. - The IPFW men's soccer team couldn't overcome two first-half goals as the 'Dons fell at Eastern Illinois 2-0 in a Summit League match at Lakeside Field on Sunday afternoon.
Eastern Illinois (3-10-1, 1-3-1 Summit) jumped out to an early lead as Jake Brillhart tapped the ball in the goal following a pass from Nick Smith in the 11th minute. The Panthers would extend their lead over the 'Dons (4-8-2, 2-3-0 Summit) with a late goal in the first half from Dominic Recca. Recca found the back of the net following a deflection on goal. Victor Krogmann and Kyle Callender were credited with an assist.
After a tough opening 45 minutes which only saw one shot from the Mastodons, the Blue and White came out firing in the second half. Trying to climb back in the match, Jacob Gerondale fired a shot in the 56th minute, only to see it go off the cross bar.
Late in regulation, Stephen Danielian had two chances to put a goal on the board for the 'Dons. Danielian took his first shot of the match in the 81st minute, but the Eastern Illinois goalkeeper was able to make a save. Just five minutes later, Danielian's second shot of the match landed in the arms of the Panther keeper yet again.
Raphael Kotzock and Cody Schweitzer split time in net, as Kotzock was given the loss following the two goals in the first half. Kotzock made four saves against the Panthers while facing 11 shots. Schweitzer earned two saves while facing five shots during the second half of play.
For the match, the Mastodons earned a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks, while outshooting the Panthers 7-5 in the second half.
The Mastodons travel to in-state rival Valparaiso to face the Crusaders in a non-conference matchup. The match is set to begin at 8:30 p.m., at Brown Field.
