Tom’s PK Snaps Mastodon Skid against In-State Rival Valparaiso
10/29/2014 11:24:00 PM | Men's Soccer
VALPARAISO, Ind. – Corey Tom's penalty kick in secures the IPFW men's soccer team win over in-state rival Valparaiso at Brown Field on Wednesday night. The shutout was the first win for the Mastodons against the Crusaders since a 3-0 victory on September 18, 1986, snapping a 14-game skid.
IPFW (5-8-4) was awarded a penalty kick after Carmelo Morales was brought down in the box, helping the 'Dons top the Crusaders (8-4-4). Tom also scored the game-winning goal off a penalty kick in a 1-0 victory over Oral Roberts on October 11.
"It's a big win for us," said Tom. "Valparaiso has been a good team this year and pulled off some upsets over tough competition like Michigan State. It's huge for us to come in and win. It's not often we can pull out a win over an in-state rival like this so it definitely builds confidence heading into our next match."
Raphael Kotzock earned his fourth shutout of the year after making five saves. Kotzock earned two crucial back-to-back saves in the 58th minute. Kotzock made the first save to his left, but had to back track and make a diving save to his right five seconds later. Following a foul on Valparaiso, Kotzock's goal kick sent the ball down the field, resulting in a scrum in the box, which led to the goal on Morales.
The Blue and White defense faced adversity as they overcame 16 shots from the Crusaders, but refused to let up a goal. IPFW finished with four shots in the match, placing two on goal.
The Mastodons wrap up their regular season with a Summit League match against Omaha on Saturday, November 1 at 7 p.m. The 'Dons will be honoring Scott Williams, Alex Kemp, Mike Enghofer, and Jacob Gerondale prior to the match for Senior Day.
