Williams’ Goal Lifts the Mastodons over Omaha on Senior Day
11/1/2014 10:47:00 PM | Men's Soccer
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – After being honored during Senior Day celebrations, Scott Williams capped off the cold night lifting the IPFW men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Omaha on Saturday.
The Mastodon's (6-8-4, 3-3-0 Summit League) honored Williams, Jacob Gerondale, Alex Kemp, and Mike Enghofer as they played in their last home match of their collegiate career. The Mavericks fell to 7-5-2 on the season and 2-2-1 in the Summit League.
With temperatures dipping into the low 30s and the 'Dons fighting to keep their postseason hopes alive, Corey Tom took a shot from 15 yards out and Williams managed to get a foot on it and redirect it past a diving goalkeeper in the 50th minute.
The physical match saw Cody Schweitzer make seven saves against the Mavericks, including four in the second half, to earn his second shutout of the year. Omaha's Josh Christensen made four saves during the match. The Maverick's held a 3-1 edge over the 'Dons in corner kicks during the second half and 10-2 overall.
The victory catapults the Mastodons into second place in the Summit League standings with nine points. The Blue and White anxiously awaits the results of next weekend's Summit League matches to determine whether or not the 'Dons make the field-of-four in the Summit League tournament from November 13-15. Denver, Omaha, Oral Roberts, and IUPUI are tied for third with seven points. Omaha is ineligible for postseason play due to its transition to Division I soccer.
