Mastodons Fall to Western Illinois 1-0 on Penalty Kick

MACOMB, Ill. – The IPFW men's soccer team fell 1-0 to Western Illinois on a windy Saturday afternoon at John MacKenzie Field. The loss drops the Mastodons to 3-5-3 and 1-1-0 in the Summit League, while Western Illinois improves to 5-4-1 and 1-0-0 in conference play.
Western Illinois' Charlie Bales capitalized on a penalty kick in the 9th minute of play, ending Raphael Kotzock's scoreless streak at 291 minutes and scoring the lone goal of the match.
After a rough first half going into the wind, the Mastodons came out aggressive in the second 45 minutes.
The Blue and White had late chances to tie the match as they fired off three shots in the final three minutes of play. Corey Tom began the barrage in the 87th minute, but Dietrich turned it away to preserve the shutout. Tom would get another shot off in the 88th minute, but it went off a Leatherneck defender. In a last ditch effort, Andy O'Donoghue took the last shot of the day for the Mastodons just 21 seconds after Tom's shot was blocked. Dietrich once again made the save, giving Western Illinois the victory.
