Schweitzer Saves the Day with a Dozen Stops at Detroit
10/7/2014 6:48:00 PM | Men's Soccer
DETROIT - IPFW freshman goalkeeper Cody Schweitzer had a dozen saves, while Corey Tom scored the team's lone goal in the 59th minute of the Mastodons' 1-1 tie with the Detroit Titans.
The Mastodons, which go to 3-5-4 with the tie, set a new program mark for ties in a season, surpassing the three ties that the 1979, 1993, and 2008 squads put up for the year. The one goal allowed also increased a streak of five consecutive matches giving up just one goal or fewer for IPFW this season, the longest such streak since the 1999 team ran off 13 consecutive matches with one or fewer goals, en route to advancing to the "Elite Eight" of the NCAA Division II Soccer Championships.
The two teams played through a scoreless first 45 minutes, with the Titans holding a firm 7-5 advantage in shots, with four of Detroit's and two of IPFW's shots being on goal.
In the second half, Tom struck first when he took a pass from freshman Britt Watts and beat Detroit goalkeeper Robbie Blackwell, giving the hosts a narrow 1-0 advantage 59 minutes into the contest.
The Titans wasted little time in answering back, with a goal from Matt Harkema in the 65th minute, knotting the score at one apiece. Neither team would be able to squeeze a goal across in the final 25 minutes of the game. Schweitzer picked up half of his match save total in the second half, as the Mastodons were out-shot 17-to-3 in the period.
IPFW out-shot the titans 3-2 in the first overtime period, but were out-shot 3-1 in the final 10 minutes, as neither team could find the back of the net in the extra 20 total minutes.
Tom and Watts each had four shots for IPFW - both with two on goal - while Stephen Danelian had two and one each from Austin Sibery and Akis Lyrintzis.
The Mastodons return to action on Saturday, October 11, when the squad plays host to the Golden Eagles of Oral Roberts in a 7 p.m. kickoff at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
