Tom’s PK Leads Mastodons to 1-0 Win Over Oral Roberts
10/11/2014 10:18:00 PM | Men's Soccer
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Corey Tom's penalty kick in the 63rd minute leads the IPFW men's soccer to a 1-0 victory over Oral Roberts on Saturday evening at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
The victory brings IPFW's record to 4-5-4 and 2-1-0 in the Summit League, while Oral Roberts falls to 4-5-2 and 0-2-1 league play.
While fighting for possession of the ball in front of the Golden Eagles' net, ORU's Ben LaCourse roughly tackled Drake Bowers, leading to a Mastodon penalty kick. Tom would take the kick, placing it in the bottom right corner for the lone goal of the match. With the goal, Tom leads IPFW with nine points (4 g, 1 a) on the season.
The Mastodons had a late chance to add to their scoring as Austin West blasted a shot from 15 yards out, only to have it ricochet off the crossbar. Austin fought through two Golden Eagle defenders in the 88th minute prior to getting the shot off.
Raphael Kotzock earned his third shutout of the year after making five saves, including three in the second half. Kotzock now sits second in the league for shutouts. While Kotzock earned the shutout, it was team effort as the Mastodons earned three team saves in the second half of the match to keep Oral Roberts scoreless.
Both teams each had six shots in the first half, while Oral Roberts held a 15-12 edge overall. IPFW earned eight saves, including six in the second half, while the Golden Eagles finished with five stops.
The Mastodons travel to Denver for a Summit League match against the Pioneers on October 18. The match is set to begin at 9 p.m., at CIBER Field.
