Seibert Joins 1,000-Point Club, Ties Free Throw Record In Win
12/6/2014 8:59:00 PM | Women's Basketball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Haley Seibert connected on six free throws in the final 24 seconds to help the IPFW women's basketball team defeat NKU 65-59. The victory improves the Mastodon's record to 4-4 on the season.
Seibert tied a school record with a perfect 14-for-14 shooting at the free throw line, finishing the night with a game-high 19 points. Her 14-for-14 at the line is tied for the second-best mark in Summit League history and is currently tied for the best mark in Division I. Seibert has run her consecutive free throws made to 51, which ranks 8th all-time in Division I history.
Keanna Gary finished a rebound shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds, both of which were a season-high. Rachel Rinehart also finished in double-digits for the 'Dons with 13 points. Hillary Moore tied a career-high with nine rebounds while Courtney Ogle finished with a career-high four blocks.
Early in the first half the Mastodons and Norse exchanged five lead changes as neither team was able pull away. With IPFW trailing 15-14 with 11:53 to play, the 'Dons used an 11-5 run over the next 5:31 to lead 25-17. The Mastodons pushed their lead to 37-24 at halftime on a three-pointer by Seibert with 34 seconds left.
IPFW increased its lead to 18 points with 15:04 left in the game as Rinehart drove to the basket and made a layup as she was fouled. At the 14:28 mark of the second half, Seibert connected on a pair of free throws to become the 19th women's basketball player to join the 1,000-point club.
After Seibert's free throws, NKU made a 21-9 run to pull within five at 56-51 with 2:35 left in the game. In the final minute, the Norse closed the gap to a four-point deficit, but clutch free throw shooting by Seibert sealed the Mastodon victory.
This was the first meeting between the 'Dons and Norse since both schools moved to Division I. The old Division II and GLVC rivals had previously met 35 times. It was the Mastodon's first win over NKU since January 16, 1997.
IPFW turns its focus to a road trip at Big Ten opponent Indiana on December 10 at 7 p.m.
