CHICAGO – The IPFW men's volleyball team entered Saturday night's conference showdown with top-ranked Loyola looking to upset its second straight Top-10 opponent after stunning No. 10 Lewis on Thursday night in five sets.
The Mastodons fell in the opening set, but responded by taking the second to even the match at one set apiece. However, the Ramblers, who extended their winning streak to 12 straight, rallied back to capture a four-set victory (25-21, 23-25, 25-21, 25-18).
Junior setter Omar Rivera dished out 46 assists while Eddie Rivera and Andrew Sellan finished with 14 and 12 kills, respectively, to pace the 'Dons. Nick Smalter followed with nine kills as Ramon Burgos and Bryan Saunders added eight apiece. Luis Bertran recorded a team-high eight digs and Rivera and Burgos had four rejections apiece.
Loyola started the match red-hot, charging out to a 6-1 lead. IPFW settled in though and used a 9-2 run to pull ahead 12-10. The two teams went back and forth from there, battling to a 20-20 tie, before a 4-1 run by the Ramblers gave the home team the first set 25-21.
The Mastodons bounced back in the second set behind their high-powered offense, which hit .469 with 18 kills in the frame. Rivera had eight of those kills on 12 swings, including the final one that gave IPFW the set 25-23.
In the third set, Loyola grabbed an early lead that it would never relinquish. The Ramblers jumped out in front 3-1 and eventually pushed the advantage to four, 19-15. The Mastodons had one last rally in them though getting consecutive kills from Sellan, Burgos, and Rivera to get within one, but Loyola would hold off the late surge and win the set 25-21.
After a back and forth start to the fourth period, Loyola was finally able to pull away from IPFW as the nation's best offense hit .577 en route to claiming the set 25-18.
The Ramblers out-hit IPFW .379 (58 kills) to .305 (52 kills) on a night where the Mastodons saw their five-match winning streak come to an end.
IPFW returns to action on Friday, February 28 when it hosts Mount Olive at 7 p.m. inside the Gates Sports Center to kick-off a five-match homestand.
