Baseball Drops Final Game of Weekend Series

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - The IPFW baseball team fell its final game of a weekend series at Southeast Missouri State 6-5, dropping their fourth straight game.
The Mastodons (2-6 overall) were led by Brandon Soat who finished the afternoon 3-for-4 at the plate, drew a walk and also stole a base. Kristian Gayday picked up a pair of hits and drove in a run. Carter DeBoe went 1-for-2 and drew three walks while Steve Lowden had the other Mastodon RBI.
IPFW got on the board in the top of the first inning. Tyler Shepherd reached on a Redhawk error to lead off the game. After back-to-back singles by Soat and DeBoe, Wirth grounded into a double play, allowing Shepherd to score from third.
SEMO got the run back in the second on a two-out double down the left field line.
In the third, the Mastodons capitalized on another SEMO error. Soat and DeBoe drew back-to-back walks which led to an error by the Redhawk third baseman, allowing Soat to score.
The Redhawks added three runs in the bottom of the fourth, all coming with two outs.
The Mastodons tied the score in the fifth as they plating two runs in the inning, both with two outs. Soat led off the inning with a single and stole second. Two outs later, Gayday singled through the infield to score DeBoe who had reached on a walk. Lowden followed with a single to score Kevin Wirth after reaching on a fielder's choice.
In the bottom half of the fifth, SEMO broke the tie with back-to-back one-out singles.
IPFW put runners on in three of the final four innings, but the 'Dons were unable to push across the tying run.
Nate White suffered the loss for IPFW, pitching one inning of relief and allowing two runs on two hits. Dane Davis started for the 'Dons and surrendered four runs, one earned, over four innings and struck out two. Kevin Kimball and Connor Lawhead combined to pitch the final three innings, allowing just one hit.
IPFW returns to the field for a three-game series at Arkansas Little Rock, with the first pitch of game one set for February 28 at 7 p.m. (EST).
