BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The IPFW softball team swept the opening day of the Hampton Inn of Dunn Invitational, winning 6-0 over Valparaiso and 11-5 over Seton Hall.
Miranda Kramer pitched nine innings over the two games, striking out 17 and allowing just two hits. She gave up two walks in her time in the circle, picking up a win in the opener and a save in the nightcap. Megan Flenniken was the winning pitcher in the second game, scattering five hits and four earned runs over five innings of work, striking out one.
Alex Bousquet went 3-for-4 with three walks and four RBI's for the Mastodons, who batted .357 as a team in their first two games. Larissa Franklin was 3-for-5, while Kayti Hanson went 3-for-6. Dani Pugh drove in a team-high five runs in the first two games of the season, as Emily Olszewski scored a team-leading three runs.
Kramer was nearly unhittable in the opener, scattering the two hits, one each in the first and fourth innings, as she retired the last 11 Crusader batters to come to the plate - six by strikeout.
Valparaiso opened the game with a single and a walk; however, the next three batters struck out, ending the Crusaders' best threat in the game with runners on first and second. Outside of the bottom of the first inning, neither teams' offense could gain traction over the first three innings before the Mastodons opened up a six-run fourth inning.
Ashleigh Bousquet drew a one-out walk and was followed by a home run from Pugh to provide what would end up being the game-winning runs.
Olszewski singled home Hillary Kartman to take the score to 3-0, before Hanson singled home pinch-runner Beka Ferguson. Alex Bousquet closed the scoring on the inning with a two-run single to center field, giving the Mastodons the 6-0 lead.
The six runs would be more than enough cushion for the junior pitcher on the day, as Kramer settled down after seeing her first two batters reach base, allowing just one baserunner the rest of the way, winning her season opener in grand style.
Hanson was 2-for-3 for IPFW, as six other players had one hit apiece. Alex Bousquet and Pugh each drove in two runs, as each of the team's six runs came from a different player.
Seton Hall got on the board first in IPFW's afternoon finale with a lead-off home run from starting pitcher Danielle Destaso, putting the visitors on the scoreboard ahead 1-0. The teams traded scoreless half innings before the Mastodon offense erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the third inning.
In the third inning, the first three batters reached base on a walk, an error, and a bunt single, before Alex Bousquet walked home a run, knotting the score at 1-1. Ashleigh Bousquet hit an RBI groundout to put the Mastodons ahead 2-1. Pugh followed with a single that drove in Larissa Franklin, before Kartman chased home Alex Bousquet with a sacrifice fly, taking the score to 4-1 in favor of the Mastodons.
Audrey Mintari drove in Prestlee Cooper and Taylor Gordy Prescott with a double - the eventual game-winning runs - before Franklin drew the inning's second bases-loaded walk, pushing across Mintari. Alex Bousquet - the same player that drove in the first run of the inning - drove in the frame's final run with a single to center field that scored Olszewski.
Seton Hall answered back with four runs in the top of the fourth, cutting the gap to 8-5, before the Mastodons added three insurance runs, two coming on an RBI double by Pugh that scored Alex Bousquet and Franklin, and a Mintari single that scored Pugh.
Five different players picked up two hits on the game for IPFW, with Franklin, Alex Bousquet, and Olszewski each scoring twice, and Pugh and Mintari each driving in three. Flenniken picked up the win, improving to 1-0 on the season, while Kramer picks up her first save of the year.
The team returns to action on Saturday, with a 10 a.m. contest against UMass Lowell, followed by a 12:30 p.m. tilt against tournament host Campbell.
