Volleyball Wins Eighth Straight Home Match, Sweep Antelopes

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW men's volleyball team won its eighth straight home match, defeating MIVA foe Grand Canyon 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-23).
Eddie Rivera led IPFW with 12 kills and five aces on the night, while hitting .571 from the floor. Ramon Burgos added nine kills while Nick Smalter had seven and Bryan Saunders and Andrew Sellan each had six. Sellan also led the 'Dons with four blocks.
Omar Rivera led all players with 32 assists on the night while Luis Bertran made a team-high 10 digs.
The Mastodons had trouble with Grand Canyon to start the match, as the Antelopes held an early 6-4 lead. With the score tied 9-9, the 'Dons used a 7-0 run to take the lead for good in the set.
In the second set, IPFW scored the first two points of the set as it never lost the lead. A 7-2 run early in the set gave the Mastodons a 12-6 advantage, as Grand Canyon never pulled closer than four points the rest of the way. The 'Dons didn't commit an error in the set en-route to hitting a match-high .481.
IPFW trailed early in the third set but a 7-2 run gave the 'Dons an 8-5 lead. The Antelopes answered by cutting the Mastodon lead to one, 13-12. With IPFW leading by one, 18-17, a three point swing by the Mastodons pushed their lead to 21-17. Grand Canyon answered with a three-point run of its own to cut the 'Dons lead to 23-22. Eddie Rivera came through for IPFW with two kills to give the Mastodons the set and the match.
As a team, IPFW committed just nine attack errors as the Mastodons hit a combined .340 for the match.
The two teams will back at it again tomorrow night, March 21, with first serve set for 7 p.m.
