Men's Volleyball Rolls In Straight Sets

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The 15th ranked IPFW men's volleyball team picked up its fifth straight victory as the Mastodons defeated Belmont Abbey 3-0 (25-14, 25-10, 25-14), improving their record to 13-3 on the season.
Jeremy Swartz led all players with a game-high nine kills and five blocks while hitting .900 on the night. Nick Smalter added six kills and Kevin Villela had five. In all, 12 different IPFW players recorded a kill.
Omar Rivera had a game-high 20 assists while Jordan Armstrong added 13. Rivera also finished the night with a career-high seven aces. JW Kieckheffer and Luis Bertran had a game-high five digs for the Mastodons.
IPFW held a 13-10 lead in the opening set until the 'Dons went on a 7-1 run and then closing out the set with a 12-4 advantage. In the first set, Smalter had five kills, as the Mastodons finished with five blocks.
In the second set, back-to-back aces from Rivera helped put the Mastodons up 10-2 early. The 'Dons closed out the set on an 8-2 run as Rivera finished the second set with six aces. The 10 points by Belmont Abbey in the set are the fewest IPFW has allowed in a 25-point set this season.
The Mastodons began the third set on a 5-1 run and never looked back. IPFW ended the match on a 10-2 run, securing the sweep.
As a team the 'Dons finished the night hitting .471, their second best performance of the season. The Mastodons also finished with a season-high 10 aces.
IPFW travels to Ball State for a match with the No. 13 ranked Cardinals on March 11 with first serve set for 7:30 p.m.
