Men's Volleyball Looks for Season Sweep against Buckeyes

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW men's volleyball team will look to pick up a season sweep of the Ohio State Buckeyes, as the Mastodons took the first meeting between the teams earlier this season in Fort Wayne.

SCOUTING THE MASTODONS
IPFW comes into its one-match weekend looking to snap out of a two-match losing skid as the team fell to 11th ranked Lewis and top ranked Loyola a weekend ago.
The team, which maintained its ranking position of 14 despite dropping the two matches, is led by Andrew Sellan and Eddie Rivera, who have 265 and 250 kills, respectively. Ramon Burgos and Bryan Saunders have 169 and 167 kills, apiece, as Nick Smalter is just off of the triple-figure pace with 91. Omar Rivera averages 10.89 assists per set with 860 total helpers on the year. Sellan leads a tight battle for the team lead in service aces with 30, was Eddie Rivera has 29 and Omar Rivera 28.
Defensively Luis Bertran leads four triple-figure dig totals with 163, as Eddie Rivera has 156, Omar Rivera 121, and Andrew Sellan 104. Burgos has a team-best 61 blocks (0.86 per set), with Saunders close behind with 55.
SCOUTING THE BUCKEYES
Ohio State comes into the Friday match after snapping a five-match losing skid by sweeping the weekend over Quincy (3-1) and Lindenwood (3-2) at home.
In the last game, a five-set victory over LIndenwood, Michael Henchy knocked down a team-best 19 kills, while Driss Guessous had 14 kills in the win. Guessous hit .722 in the match (14 kills, 1 error, 18 attempts), as the team hit just .218 for the entire match. Christy Blough dished out 44 assists, as Miles Johnson had a pair of service aces.
Henchy picked up a dozen kill attempts, while also leading the team with six blocks.
On the year, the Buckeyes have three players with over 200 kills, and four with over 100. Andrew Lutz has a team-best 285 kills (3.48 per set), with Henchy (247), Guessous (233), and Johnson (161) all sitting in triple figures with Dustan Neary just off the pace with 94. Blough has a team-best 717 assists (10.86 per set), as Johnson leads the team with 21 service aces.
Defensively, four players have triple-figure digs, led by Henchy's 152, while Gabriel Domecus has 130, Johnson 121, and Lutz 115. Guessous' 79 blocks are a team-high, while Neary has 62 and Henchy 57.
ALL-TIME SERIES
Ohio State leads the all-time series with the Mastodons by a 66-35 margin; however, IPFW has won the last two meetings. Last season's 3-2 win snapped an 11-game Ohio State win streak in the series. The Mastodons had a stretch of 10 consecutive wins from 1990 until 1992, and a streak of 14 wins in 16 total matches in the late 80's into the early 90's.
LAST TIME OUT
In a battle of two teams ranked in the AVCA top-15, the 14th ranked IPFW men's volleyball team fell to conference rival and No. 1 ranked Loyola Chicago 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-22).
Andrew Sellan had a team-high 11 kills in the loss for the Mastodons. Bryan Saunders added five kills while Nick Smalter and Eddie Rivera each had four.
Omar Rivera led the 'Dons with 25 assists and Luis Bertran had a team-high seven digs.
IPFW scored the first two points of the opening set on kills by Sellan and Smalter. Loyola took the lead for good as the Ramblers went on a 5-1 run, to lead 5-3. With IPFW trailing by one at 13-12, the Ramblers scored five straight points as the 'Dons never pulled closer down the stretch.
The Mastodons never led in the second frame as Loyola closed out the set with a 13-3 advantage after IPFW had pulled the score to 12-10.
Trailing early in the third set, a kill by Sellan capped off a 5-1 run for the 'Dons, taking its first lead of the set at 6-5. The two sides began to battle, exchanging six leads and 11 tie scores, as neither team was able to gain more than a two-point advantage. With the set tied 17-17, the Ramblers scored three straight points to lead 20-17, as the Mastodons were unable to recover.
The match was the 19th time that IPFW faced the top ranked team in the nation.
