Baseball Wins In Extra Innings, Splits With Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. - A two-run 10th inning earned the IPFW baseball squad a split with Omaha as the Mastodons dropped game one 6-3 before coming back in game two to win 5-3.
Steve Lowden led IPFW at the dish going 4-for-8 on the day including two doubles and drove in a pair of runs. Kevin Wirth collected three hits for the afternoon while Kristian Gayday added a pair of hits and a pair of RBI.
Gayday started the second inning with a bang, delivering on his 11th home run of the season on a 1-0 count to left center field.
Omaha tied the game in the bottom half of the second on a groundout.
The Mastodons answered back in the third, scoring twice in the inning. Lowden drew a bases loaded walk and Greg Kaiser reached on an error by the Mavs shortstop with the bases still loaded.
In the fourth, Omaha again tied the game on a two out, two-run double.
The Mavericks won the game in the sixth, scoring three runs in the inning.
IPFW reliever Connor Lawhead took the loss, surrendering three runs in 1.1 innings of work.
Game two saw Gayday get the scoring going for the Mastodons once again, delivering a two-out single that allowed Carter DeBoe to score from second.
Omaha tied the game in the second on a two-out RBI double.
Lowden broke the tie in the sixth with a two-out RBI single to right scoring Gayday. The Mavs quickly answered with back-to-back solo home runs in the bottom of the sixth to lead 3-2.
IPFW tied the game in the seventh, as Malcolm White delivered a single to score Caleb Fenimore who has doubled and advanced to third on a single by Jon Timmerman. The 'Dons could have taken the lead in the inning, but left the bases loaded.
With the score tied 3-3, the game headed to extra innings for the third time this season for the Mastodons. With one out in the 10th, Wirth singled and Lowden followed with a double. Kaiser then delivered a sacrifice fly to center field, allowing Wirth to score from third. Shane Trevino followed with a single up the middle to plate the final run.
Zach Mishler was nearly perfect in four innings of relief, allowing only one hit - which came in the 10th - while striking out three.
The two teams will wrap up their series on May 10 with first pitch set for 1 p.m. (ET).
