
Mastodons Face Xavier in Final Preseason Exhibition

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW men's soccer wraps up its preseason exhibition schedule at the Shindigz National Soccer Festival against Xavier on August 23. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at the Fort Wayne Soccer Club.

SCOUTING THE MASTODONS
The Mastodons are coming off a 3-0 victory over Indiana Tech during the first preseason exhibition match. Stephen Danielian had the game-winning goal in the 23rd minute after a free kick from Corey Tom deflected off the crossbar. IPFW also saw goals from Akis Lyrintzis and Austin West.
Freshman goalie Cody Schweitzer made three stops for the 'Dons in the first half, while last year's starting goalkeeper, Raphael Kotzock, earned one save against the Warriors.
IPFW welcomes back 10 of last year's 11 starters, including six of last season's top-six point scorers. Mike Harper enters his eighth season as the Mastodon head coach, looking to improve on the team's fifth-place finish in the Summit League during the 2013 campaign.
Adding depth for the 'Dons defense are newcomers Nick Brown, Cameron Sinclair, and Bill Whitcomb. Andy O'Donoghue returns to the backfield after suffering a season-ending injury two games in last year. Camelo Morales, Logan West, and Tim Thomas add depth at midfield, while Britt Watts, Adam Perolio, and Eau Rikhotso will compete for time as forwards. Morales, West, O'Donoghue, and Watts all combined for five shots against Indiana Tech in the 'Dons first exhibition match.
SCOUTING THE MUSKETEERS
Xavier enters the 2014 season coming off its fourth-straight 10-win season last year. The Musketeers finished tied for third in their inaugural BIG EAST season, finishing 10-7-2. Xavier went 6-3-0 in the league, finishing with 18 points and earning the No. 3 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament.
The Musketeers were tabbed seventh in the BIG EAST preseason coaches' poll, with redshirt senior Will Walker being named to the preseason All-League team. Walked finished 2013 with 13 points (5 g, 2 a).
Xavier brought in the No. 26 recruiting class, according to College Soccer News, but suffered the loss of 2013 BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year in Nick Hagglund and Matt Walker. Hagglund was selected 10th overall in the MLS SuperDraft, while Walker, Second Team All-BIG EAST, signed with the Columbus Crew in January. Additionally, Walker led the team last year with 25 points (9 g, 7 a).
Xavier had a suffocating defense last season, finishing third in the league for goals allowed (19) and fourth in goals-against average (0.96). The Musketeers racked up six shutouts last year, tying them for fourth in the league.
The third and fourth-leading scorers return for Xavier from last year in forwards Jalen Brown and Calum Latham, who tallied a combined five goals. Senior defender Garrett Halfhill also returns, anchoring the Musketeer defense, while also adding a goal and three assists a year ago. Starting goalkeeper Eric Osswald is back after finishing second in the BIG EAST for save percentage (.808) and third in goals-against average (0.82).

This marks the third all-time meeting between the two schools. Xavier holds a 2-0-0 edge over IPFW, with the last meeting going the Musketeers' way, 2-0, at IPFW on September 18, 2012.
IPFW SLATED SEVENTH
IPFW was picked seventh by the Summit League coaches, the league office recently announced. The Mastodons earned eight total poll points. Denver, the defending Summit League champion, was unanimously picked as the favorite to repeat, collecting 36 points and six first-place votes. Omaha was picked second with 29 points and one first-place vote, followed by Western Illinois (28) and Oral Roberts (21). Rounding out the field IUPUI (15), Eastern Illinois (10) and IPFW.
