FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW men's soccer kicks off the 2014 season on Friday, August 29, with the second game of a doubleheader at the Hefner Soccer Complex. The Mastodons take on the Saint Joseph's (Ind.) Pumas at 7 p.m., following the women's match against Detroit.

The Mastodon finished their exhibition schedule 1-1-0 with a 3-0 victory over Indiana Tech and a 1-0 loss to Xavier in the Shindigz National Soccer Festival. Stephen Danielian has led the offense during the exhibition matches, placing two-of-three shots on goal, including the game-winning goal over Indiana Tech.

The Mastodon finished their exhibition schedule 1-1-0 with a 3-0 victory over Indiana Tech and a 1-0 loss to Xavier in the Shindigz National Soccer Festival. Stephen Danielian has led the offense during the exhibition matches, placing two-of-three shots on goal, including the game-winning goal over Indiana Tech.
Even with the loss against Xavier, the Mastodons had a chance to tie the game late in regulation. Britt Watts managed two shots on goal in the final seven minutes of play, only to have the Musketeer goalkeeper push both threats away.
Raphael Kotzock and Cody Schweitzer have split time in net for IPFW, each making three saves between the two exhibition matches. Kotzock has a perfect save percentage, while Schweitzer has managed a .750 save percent.
SCOUTING THE PUMAS
New head coach Rob Stewart takes over a Puma program which finished with a 2-15-1 record last year. Saint Joseph's suffered the loss of its top point getter in Michael Lipton. Lipton scored 15 points for the Pumas last year, coming off seven goals and an assist. The Pumas also saw the loss of their starting goaltender from a year ago in Steve Quella. Quella made 102 saves, while facing 272 shots, finishing with a 2.17 goals against average.
Saint Joseph's is anchored by its three returning seniors, which includes defenders Shawn Krager and Jeff Grider. Last season Krager earned three points, each off assists. Eric Frasco returns as a senior midfielder who recorded four shots last year.
Also returning for the Pumas is junior forward Angel Zamudio. Zamudio saw action in 18 matches last season, making 16 starts. Over the course of the year, Zamudio recorded 11 shots, placing seven on goal, and tallying one point off a single assist.Saint Joseph's is anchored by its three returning seniors, which includes defenders Shawn Krager and Jeff Grider. The Mastodons hold a 13-3-5 record against the Pumas, including a 2-1 win in their last meeting on September 23, 1998. IPFW currently has a three-game unbeaten streak against Saint Joseph's, boasting a 2-0-1 record in those matches. Over the past decade, the Mastodons are 6-2-2 against the Pumas.
OPENING DAY
IPFW holds a 17-16-4 all-time record in season opening matches, while holding a 16-18-3 record in home openers. Last season, the Mastodons battled Northern Kentucky to a 2-2 draw in the season home opener. The 'Dons saw goals from Oscar Uyamadu and Stephen Danielian, while Raphael Kotzock made eight saves in the match, including two in the first overtime. Uyamadu and Jose Rodriguez each had four shots in the match, with two on goal.
