Mastodons Fall 5-0 to the Bearcats at Home
9/17/2014 10:10:00 PM | Men's Soccer
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW men's soccer team fought hard, but ultimately fell 5-0 to Cincinnati at the Hefner Soccer Complex on Wednesday night.
The Mastodons (2-3-2) were unable to capitalize on scoring chances throughout the game, as the Bearcats (1-3-2) walked away with the victory.
Cincinnati rushed out to an early lead following goals from Alejandro Garcia and John Manga in the 14th and 15th minute, respectively.
The 'Dons were on the wrong side of an unfortunate bounce as Cincinnati's Ashani Walker shot the ball off the right post, only to have the ball deflected directly to John Rutan for the goal in the bottom right of the goal. The Bearcats added goals from Manga and Alan Rovira in the 65th and 79th minute, respectively.
The 'Dons came out of the half looking to take control. Jose Rodriguez opened the second half shooting just 40 seconds into the period, but his shot barely missed the net as if ricocheted off the crossbar.
Coming in the 66th minute, Austin West came close to putting the Mastodons on the board. With the scramble in front of the goal, West placed a shot toward the center of the net, but the Bearcat defense made a team save to keep the 'Dons scoreless.
West came close to a goal for the 'Dons in the 30th minute, attempting a header off a cross from Corey Tom, only to have the Cincinnati goalkeeper make the save. Spencer Brown's attempt to score was also turned away as Brown tried to beat the buzzer before the first half in the 45th minute of play.
IPFW held the held the upper hand in corner kicks, 7-5, and saves 6-4. However, the 'Dons were outshot 19-9 during the match.
The Mastodons take on the Green Bay Phoenix on Sunday, September 21, in an IPFW doubleheader. The men's match is set to begin at 1 p.m., at the Hefner Soccer Complex, followed by the IPFW women taking on Loyola-Illinois.
