9/19/2014 3:39:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
TOLEDO, Ohio - In the opening match of the Rocket Invitational, a career-high 30 kills from Emily Spencer was not enough to push the IPFW women's volleyball team past Toledo, falling 3-2 (23-25, 26-24, 25-17, 23-25, 11-15). The Mastodons will take on Duquesne in the nightcap at 5 p.m.
Toledo won the opening set of the weekend after breaking a 14-14 tie with seven consecutive points. IPFW won the second set with three straight points to end the frame while the Mastodons dominated the third with a 14-4 run to open the set.
The 'Dons led midway through the fourth set before the Rockets scored four straight to force a fifth set. With the score tied 5-5 in the final set, Toledo took the lead for good with a three-point swing as IPFW was unable to make a late charge.
Spencer hit a season-high .424 from the floor en route to her fourth consecutive double-double with 11 digs. She became the first Mastodon to eclipse 30 kills in a match since IPFW Hall of Famer Fabiana Souza had 34 against South Dakota State on Nov. 12, 2005. Spencer also improved her school record to 33 consecutive matches with double-digit kills.
Kendall Wienkes added a double-double of her own with 15 kills and 13 digs. Sarah Heckman finished with eight kills and five blocks while Hailie Ripley added six kills and a team-high six blocks. Madison Spence earned her first double-double of the season with a match-high 53 assists and 11 digs as Olivia Hahn led the team with 15 digs.
