Mastodons Fall To #17 Minnesota To Close Out The Rocket Invite

TOLEDO, Ohio - The IPFW women's volleyball team closed out the Rocket Invitational falling to 17th ranked Minnesota 3-0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-23). The Mastodons are now 6-8 on the season.
IPFW was the only team on the weekend to score at least 20 points in a set against the national ranked Golden Gophers.
Emily Spencer led the 'Dons with her 35th consecutive double-digit kill match, finished the afternoon with 13 kills to go along with eight digs and three blocks. Somer Johnson went for nine kills and a team-high nine digs. Kendall Wienkes wrapped up the tournament with five kills and six digs.
Madison Spence led IPFW with 19 assists while Mallory Slyder dished out nine.
Spencer and Spence were named to the All-Tournament Team for their performances over the weekend.
The Mastodons jumped out to an early lead over the Golden Gophers, but an 8-0 run gave Minnesota the opening set. IPFW again hung tough early in the second set until a 9-1 run put the Gophers out in front for good. The 'Dons fought from behind in the third set. Down 21-14, IPFW rattled off seven straight points to tie the score 21-21. The Mastodons stayed in it till the end, but Minnesota capped off the match with the final two points.
IPFW returns to action for its Summit League opener at South Dakota State on September 28 at 6 p.m.
