IPFW Drops Non-Conference Finale 2-0 at Indiana State
9/28/2014 4:17:00 PM | Women's Soccer
TERRE HAUTE, IND.- The IPFW women's soccer team wrapped up its non-conference slate on the road at Indiana State on Sunday afternoon, falling 2-0 after the Sycamores used two second-half goals to secure the win.
The two squads battled through 60-plus scoreless minutes before Sycamore forward Maddie Orf found the back of the net after receiving a cross from Gaelen Stejbach to take a 1-0 lead. The home team added to its lead in 86th minute as Lauren Weigel took another cross into the box, this time from Lyana Burrink, and slipped the ball past Mastodon keeper Sam Pavlika to put Indiana State up 2-0 for good.
The first 45 minutes were evenly played, with the shot count slightly in favor of Indiana State at 10-9. The Mastodons did however hold the edge in shots on goal with five to the Sycamores' two and in corner kicks (4-2) in the opening period.
After the half, the ISU defense clamped down on the IPFW attack, allowing the 'Dons just two shots and one corner kick in the final 45 minutes. A pair of freshmen in Kassidy Simpkins and Taylor Pavlika led the Mastodons with two shots a piece on the day, while seven others registered one shot each.
Pavlika played all 90 minutes in goal and collected five saves in the game.
The Mastodons open Summit League play next Sunday, October 5 at South Dakota. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
