IPFW Drops 1-0 Heartbreaker at South Dakota
10/5/2014 4:26:00 PM | Women's Soccer
VERMILLION, S.D. – The IPFW women's soccer team traveled to South Dakota to open Summit League play on Sunday afternoon as the team played its fourth out of its last five games on the road. Both squads dug in for a defensive struggle for more than 80 minutes of the contest, but it was the Coyotes that were able to end the scoring drought in the 85th minute to earn the 1-0 conference win.
It looked like the match was headed for overtime as the defense for the Blue and White fought off a feisty Coyote offensive attack—one that entered the game leading the Summit League in goals scored and assists—for over 80 minutes. The 'Dons needed just five more minutes of stout defense, but South Dakota had other plans as sophomore forward Corey Strang took a throw-in from freshman Brittney Baker and planted it in the back of the net with five minutes to play to break the tie.
The 'Dons—who fall to 2-9-0 on the season an 0-1-0 in Summit League play—were paced on the defensive side of the ball by third-year keeper Sam Pavlika. The junior tied a season-high with nine saves on the day, matching a feat she accomplished in the season-opening loss to Ball State on August 22. The mark was just one off her career-high of 10—a tally she reached twice as a sophomore in 2013.
Freshmen forwards Kassidy Simpkins and Kallianne Mogler registered the only shots of the day for IPFW.
The Mastodons return to Fort Wayne for a weekend Summit League double-header as they host South Dakota State on Friday, October 10 at 6 p.m. followed by IUPUI on Sunday, October 12 at 1 p.m.
