IPFW Offense Comes Alive in 3-3 Draw With South Dakota State
10/10/2014 10:06:00 PM | Women's Soccer
It was clear the 'Dons—who move to 2-9-1 and 0-1-1 in league play—were in attack mode from the first whistle as they fired off two shots in the first minute and a half. The visitors, however, were the first to strike as they took a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute. The goal coming by way of South Dakota State forward Tori Poole after taking a pass from fellow forward Diana Potterveld and finishing the ball past IPFW keeper Sam Pavlika.
The IPFW offensive barrage started just two minutes later. In the 14th minute sophomore Mayson Whitman sent a pass toward redshirt freshman Lindsey Swope, who challenged the keeper with the ball and took one quick touch before burying it in the back of the net to tie it at one.
The Blue and White took the lead just over a minute later on a perfectly executed corner kick set piece. Freshman Taylor Pavlika set up on the left side of the field, sending a beautiful ball across the net where junior midfielder Brooke Bishir headed it out of the air and right past the Jackrabbit keeper Elisa Stamatakis. It was Bishir's first goal on the season.
In the 21st minute, the Mastodons extended their lead to 3-1 as Whitman took a long ball from Bishir, who sent it forward from 30 yards out. As Whitman and SDSU's Stamatakis converged on the ball, the visiting keeper misjudged her leap and Whitman was able to take advantage, jumping over the keeper and nailing it into the open net.
The Jackrabbits, who came into Fort Wayne as the second-leading scoring team in the conference, weren't going to go away quietly. Forcing a corner in the 30th minute, the ensuing kick was right to the feet of Lauren Kressock, who quickly took a shot. The first shot she attempted was blocked, but the ricochet sent the ball right back to her and she wasted no time firing off another, this time just out of the reach of Pavlika.
Holding a 3-2 lead going into the second period, the home team looked to shore up its defense and hold the margin, but the Jackrabbits kept pressing. On another corner kick in the 51st minute, SDSU's Potterveld found her way to the ball right in front of the goal and used her head to notch the game back up at three.
From there, the two teams battled to gain possession of the ball as the intensity picked up considerably. The Jackrabbits pressured relentlessly, earning several chances in front of the goal, but the Mastodons' defense continued to find a way to get the stop and clear the ball. IPFW got its fair share of chances up front, but neither team could find the go-ahead score as regulation ended. For the first time during the regular season, IPFW was set for extra time.
In the first overtime, South Dakota State came out of the gate and controlled the ball for the opening five minutes, but the 'Dons defense continued to hold strong. The home team seemed to kick into another gear as the first extra period ended. That momentum carried over to the final 10 minute period as the 'Dons served up their own pressure on the Jackrabbit defense. In the end, it was both back lines who held tough and kept the opposing teams from ending the game with a golden goal to preserve the tie.
Despite surrendering a 3-1 lead, the defense for the Blue and White was impressive in holding the Jackrabbits scoreless for the final 59 minutes—earning the team a huge point in conference standings.
Whitman and Bishir were the stars of the day up front, each earning a goal and assist on the day. Overall, the offense Coach Burr was looking for came to fruition on Friday as they totaled 12 shots in the game—six times as many as they had in their Summit League opener at South Dakota last weekend. The mark was one shy of the season-high of 13 shots, which came in a 6-4 win over Northern Kentucky earlier in the season.
Pavlika had another strong day in the net for the 'Dons, registering eight saves on the night. The junior now has a conference-best 81 saves on the season, while her 265 total career saves now puts her second all-time in program history.
The Mastodons continue their four-game home stand on Sunday, October 12 as they host in-state rival IUPUI for a 1 p.m. Summit League matchup at Hefner Field.
