ABOUT IPFW
The IPFW Mastodon women's soccer squad returns 14 players who started at least two matches a season ago, including players who scored 10 of the team's 12 goals last year. Under first-year head coach Jason Burr, the Mastodons look to improve on their 6-12-1 record from 2013.
SCOUTING THE MASTODONS
IPFW finished its non-conference slate with a 2-8-0 record and has opened up Summit League play with a 0-1-1 record after two league games. In the first conference match, the 'Dons lost a 1-0 heart-breaker at South Dakota on Sunday, October 5 after holding the Coyotes scoreless for 85 minutes of the game. On Friday, October 10, IPFW hosted South Dakota State, who entered the contest atop the conference standings at 2-0-0 and owned the league's second-best scoring offense. After being held scoreless four of their last five games, the Mastodons found their offense against the Jackrabbits as they scored three first-half goals en route to a 3-3 draw. Despite giving up three goals and allowing SDSU to come back from a 3-1 deficit, the improved defense for the Blue and White dug in and held the visiting team scoreless for the final 59 minutes to earn a tie and an important point in Summit league standings. Sophomore Mayson Whitman and junior Brooke Bishir, both Fort Wayne natives, had big nights for IPFW as they tallied one goal and one assist each. Redshirt freshman Lindsey Swope connected on the other goal in the game.
Hefner Field has been kind to the 'Dons this year as they have scored 11 of their 12 goals at home, including the three on Friday night. Freshman forward Kallianne Mogler has keyed the attack up front in 2014. She is turning in an impressive freshman campaign as she leads the team in assists (4) and points (8) in addition to co-leading the team in goals (2) with Whitman, Swope and junior Rachel Good. Overall, the Mastodons have been balanced on the offensive side of the ball with eight different players registering a goal and 10 players collecting at least one point.
Third-year keeper Sam Pavlika continues to improve her numbers in the net each game. She's lowered her goals-against-average to 2.72, while her 81 saves in 2014 currently ranks first in the Summit League. Her eight saves against South Dakota State gave her 265 in her career, moving her into second place in program history. She is on pace to break the program record of 294 before the end of the season.
SCOUTING THE JAGUARS
The Jaguars finished their non-conference slate with a 2-6-3 record, losing their final three games before beginning Summit League play. The losing streak continued as the team dropped each of its first two league games, but finally got back into the win column on Friday, October 10 with a 2-0 win over visiting Denver. IUPUI enters Sunday's contest against the 'Dons with just one win, one tie and six losses on the road this season.
IUPUI has the ability to be dangerous in the offensive third of the field thanks to the tandem of forwards Krissy Kirkhoff and Tori Minnich. The freshman and sophomore, respectively, have been an offensive force in 2014, accounting for 10 of the Jaguars' 14 goals on the season, each collecting five a piece. That mark has them both tied for fourth in the Summit League in goals scored. Grace Perkowitz and Kalli Shepler-Tucker have also made major contributions to up front as they have combined for half of the team's 14 assists on the year. Outside of those four, six other players have registered at least one point this season.
The Jaguars have had two players see significant time in the net in 2014, but Catherine Schmidt has emerged as the starter with 11 games under her belt. The true freshman has spent 810 minutes in goal and recorded 54 saves—good for third in the conference. In the team's most recent win over Denver, Schmidt recorded her first-career shutout and tied her career-high with nine saves.
IUPUI is under the direction of head coach Chris Johnson, who is in his 12th season at the helm of the Jaguars. He currently owns a 75-116-26 career record.
