ABOUT IPFW
The IPFW Mastodon women's soccer squad returns 14 players who started at least two matches a season ago, including players who scored 10 of the team's 12 goals last year. Under first-year head coach Jason Burr, the Mastodons look to improve on their 6-12-1 record from 2013.
SCOUTING THE MASTODONS
IPFW finished its non-conference slate with a 2-8-0 record, dropping the latest contest 2-0 to Indiana State on the road. The Mastodons held the Sycamores scoreless for 60-plus minutes before the home team scored goals in the 63rd and 86th minute to secure the 2-0 win. Freshmen Kassidy Simpkins and Taylor Pavlika led the team with two shots a piece on the day while seven others registered one shot each.
Forward Kallianne Mogler is turning in an impressive freshman campaign as she leads the team in assists (4) and points (8) in addition to co-leading the team in goals (2) with junior Rachel Good. Overall, the Mastodons have been balanced on the offensive side of the ball through the first six weeks of the season with seven different players registering a goal and nine players collecting at least one point. The defense meanwhile has played well as of late, highlighted by a season-low one goal allowed against Loyola and a first-half shutout at Indiana State.
Third-year keeper Sam Pavlika continues to improve her numbers in the net each game. She's recorded a 2.96 goals-against-average and 64 saves in 2014—the latter which leads the Summit League entering conference play. The junior now has 248 career saves and recently overtook third place on the all-time career saves list in program history. She needs just 14 more to move into second place and is on pace to break the program record of 294 before the end of her third season.
The Mastodons are looking for their first road win of the season as they open Summit League play this weekend.
SCOUTING THE COYOTES
The Coyotes posted a 7-4-0 record heading into Summit League play and fell to Omaha 3-0 in its first conference game of the season on Friday, October 3rd. South Dakota enters the matchup with the Mastodons first in the conference in shots (187), goals scored (33) and assists (33), giving the 'Dons improving defense another challenge as they open up league play.
The South Dakota potent offensive attack has been led by forward Taylor Nivala. The junior has collected eight goals and one assist on the year, good for a conference and team-best 17 points. Fellow junior Rebecca Sparkman has added four goals and three assists from her midfield position while three others have scored at least three goals and five have scored at least two. Sophomore forward Corey Strang leads the team with four assists to go along with three goals scored. The Coyotes' stellar offense is also a balanced one, as 20 different people have registered at least one point on the season while seven have at least six points or more.
Starting goalkeeper Mackenzie Viktor has posted a 1.23 goals-against-average, which is good for second in the Summit League. The redshirt junior—in her third year as the starter for the Coyotes--has 26 saves in 802:42 minutes in goal this season.
South Dakota is under the direction of head coach Mandy Green, who is in her 5th season at the helm of the Coyotoes.
