INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The IPFW women's soccer team headed south to Indianapolis for a Sunday afternoon matchup against Butler as they looked to end the weekend on a winning note. The Bulldogs had other plans, however, downing the visiting Mastodons 4-0 at the Butler Bowl.
Three of the home team's scores came in the first half, the first coming off a header by Butler defender Shannon McDevitt to put the Bulldogs up 1-0 in the 14th minute. Five minutes later, Elise Kotsakis extended the Butlers' lead to 2-0 on a goal assisted by midfielder Sophia Maccagnone. The junior added her second assist of the day in the 35th minute, this time to sophomore forward Kathryn Voelker, who connected on a score to put Butler up 3-0.
The 'Dons registered three shots in the first half, while IPFW third-year keeper Sam Pavlika collected five saves.
Ten minutes into the second period, the Bulldogs found the back of the net for the fourth time on the day as Elise Kotsakis knocked in her second goal of the game on an unassisted score. The senior's second goal put Butler ahead 4-0, which proved to be the margin when the final whistle sounded.
Brooke Bishir, Katie Hartnett, Mayson Whitman and Gaby Romo registered one shot each on the day to lead the Mastodons. Pavlika and redshirt freshman Kiley Dunning recorded nine and five saves, respectively, for a total of 14 saves in the game. Dunning relieved Pavlika in the net in the 66th minute.
The Mastodons will split the upcoming weekend with a home and road match on Friday, September 12 and Sunday, September 14, respectively. Friday's game will feature visiting Valparaiso and the lady 'Dons in a 7 p.m. matchup at Hefner Field. The team will then finish the weekend at Miami (Ohio) with a 1 p.m. contest against the RedHawks.
