IPFW Falls 1-0 in Battle With Valparaiso
9/12/2014 10:46:00 PM | Women's Soccer
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – IPFW women's soccer hosted Valparaiso on Friday night at Hefner Field, falling 1-0 to the Crusaders after a battle between the two squads for a majority of the game.
After 80-plus scoreless minutes, Valpo midfielder Rita Craven capitalized on an opportunity in front of the net as she rocketed a shot to the bottom right corner from 10 yards out in the 81st minute. The unassisted effort by Craven was just outside the fingertips of IPFW keeper Sam Pavlika and proved to be the game-winning goal in the tight contest.
The Mastodons' defense had their most solid outing of the season, holding the back line and staying strong each time the Crusaders made a dangerous run. IPFW's one goal allowed was a season-low in the 2014 campaign. It was also the first time this year the lady 'Dons had held the opponent scoreless in the first half.
While the total number of shots favored the visitors, the final tally wasn't indicative of how intense of a back-and-forth battle it was between the two in-state foes. Particularly in the second half, each team took turns making attacks on the offensive side of the ball with each defensive holding its ground until the Crusaders found the net.
IPFW had several promising offensive advances in the second half, but the team's best chance to score came with just under four to play and trailing 1-0. Freshman forward Kallianne Mogler sent a high ball from the left corner at Valpo keeper Sydney Galvez-Daley. The redshirt sophomore bobbled the ball and lost her grip for a split second, allowing a scramble to ensue in front of the goal. The chaos resulted in the ball bouncing just over the crossbar and landing on top of the net.
Mogler and junior Rachel Good paced the 'Dons with two shots apiece, while four others registered shots on the night.
Pavlika played tough in the goal for the home team, making four saves in the game. The third-year starter needs just two more saves to move into third on the all-time career saves list in program history.
The Mastodons wrap up the weekend slate on the road at Miami of Ohio on Sunday, September 14. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
