ABOUT IPFW
The IPFW Mastodon women's soccer squad returns 14 players who started at least two matches a season ago, including players who scored 10 of the team's 12 goals last year. Under first-year head coach Jason Burr, the Mastodons look to improve on their 6-12-1 record from 2013.
SCOUTING THE MASTODONS
IPFW battled an undefeated Michigan State team on the road last weekend, eventually losing 3-1, but turning in a tough performance against a school in a Power-Five conference. The Mastodons used a second half goal by Rachel Good to ruin the Spartans' shutout bid. Forward Kallianne Mogler played well for a second-consecutive game, assisting on Good's goal and creating several other offensive attacks throughout the game. Mogler and Good are tied for the team lead in goals with two a piece, while Mogler is first in both assists (2) and points (6). The freshman has made a big impact early in her inaugural year of collegiate soccer, and IPFW will continue to look to her to create chances up front.
The IPFW offense also welcomes back its two leading scorers from last year in forward Lazzerini (3G, 2A) and midfielder Gaby Romo (4G, 1A). The sophomore tandem has combined for one goal and one assist so far in 2014.The addition of Taylor Pavlika and the return of Brooke Bishir (2G) has also provided a boost on the offensive side of the ball.
Goalkeeper Sam Pavlika is a third-year starter for the 'Dons in the net. She's recorded a 3.60 goals-against-average and 36 saves in 2014. The junior's 220 career saves is fourth in program history and she needs just 6 more to move into third-place all-time. Pavlika is on pace to break the program record by the end of the season.
After dropping a Sunday game at Butler to wrap up the weekend, the lady 'Dons are looking to get back in the win column as they return to Hefner Field on Friday.
SCOUTING THE CRUSADERS
The Crusaders have gone 1-1-3 to start off their 2014 campaign, getting a 3-0 win in its latest game against Western Illinois. Valpo is an experienced squad, returning 19 players from a team that went 8-7-3 a year ago. The Crusaders are strongest in the midfield, where they are led by seniors Kelsey Drape rand Kristen Warner. Draper was a 2013 Second Team All-Horizon League honoree and has been the starter in the middle for over 50 games as she begins her fourth and final season.
In 2014, the offense has been led by Ohio State transfer Vanesa Abad, who has netted four points on two goals—both good for the team lead heading into the matchup with the Mastodons. Three other Crusaders have accounted for goals in five games, while seven Crusaders have registered at least one point.
Sydney Galvez-Daley has been a pleasant surprise in goal for Valpo in her first year as a starting keeper. The redshirt sophomore—a transfer from Creighton University—replaces departed senior Kristen Manski, who left Valparaiso after turning in one of the best keeper careers in Horizon League history. After seeing no action in goal in 2013, Galvez-Daley has recorded a 0.53 goals-against-average with 22 saves in five games.
Valparaiso is under the direction of head coach John Marovich, who is in his 7th season at the helm of the Crusaders. Entering 2014, Marovich owned a 52-42-20 record in six years.
