Harthaller’s Career Night Lifts No. 13 Mastodons over Saint Francis

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Freshman Alex Harthaller's six aces helped the 13th-ranked (American Volleyball Coaches Association) IPFW men's volleyball team notch a 3-0 sweep over St. Francis (Pa.) in the Mastodon's home opener on Friday night. The Blue and White finished 25-19, 25-17, 25-20, improving to 2-2 on the year, while the Red Flash fall to 0-5.
The 'Dons stormed out in the first set, earning the first four points, before the Red Flash fought back to make it a one point game early on. With the set tied at 15, IPFW put the match away with authority, finishing the set on a 12-4 run. Harthaller served up three aces, while Bryan Saunders, Nick Smalter, and Andrew Sellan each had four kills in the set.
Both teams battled early in the second set, with the 'Dons leading 13-12 midway through. Following an IPFW timeout, the Mastodons earned an 8-3 run and finished the set on a 13-5 run. Sellan was instrumental in the second set, putting together seven kills and two blocks.
St. Francis came out strong in the third set, jumping to a 6-3 lead before the 'Dons battled back and tied it at 10. After trading several points, IPFW was able to string together four-straight points, giving them an 18-14 lead. The Mastodons would secure the match on a four-point run. Once again, Harthaller earned three aces in a single set, while Sellan and Saunders each earned four kills.
For the match, Sellan lead the 'Dons with 13 kills a .812 hitting percent, adding three blocks. Ramon Burgos added four blocks, while Omar Rivera dished out 34 assists. IPFW topped St. Francis 40-29 in kills and 37-27 in assists.
The Mastodons host Penn State at the Gates Center on January 17 at 7 p.m. IPFW is 2-2 all-time against Penn State when the Nittany Lions are ranked 10th in the AVCA Top-15 Poll.
