No. 13 Mastodons Upset No. 10 Penn State in Four Set Thriller

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The 13th-ranked (American Volleyball Coaches Association) IPFW men's volleyball team pulled off a 3-1 upset over No. 10 Penn State in front of a packed Gates Center of 1,316 on Saturday night. The Mastodons finished 24-26, 25-20, 25-21, 25-19 to improve their record to 3-2, while the Nittany Lions fell to 0-4.
Andrew Sellan led the 'Dons with 19 kills and a .552 hitting percentage, adding five blocks. Bryan Saunders earned 12 kills and hit .526, while Omar Rivera dished out 42 assists. Ramon Burgos led the defensive front with eight blocks.
IPFW struggled early in the first set, giving up five-straight points to Penn State as the Nittany Lions lead 10-4 midway through the match. The 'Dons would climb back in the set on short bursts, eventually tying the set at 21. Both teams exchanged the next six points before PSU put the set away, 26-24, on a service ace by Aaron Russell.
The Mastodons were in a tight battle during the second set, coming from behind early on to take an 8-7 lead. During the eighth kill, a dig from Sellan went back over the net as Rivera dashed under to keep the ball alive. After setting it back to the IPFW side, Sellan leaped up and slammed it down, giving the 'Dons a point.
Moments later, Sellan would continue the momentum swing for the Blue and White. With his back facing the net, Sellan tossed the ball over to keep the play alive before the ball found the back corner, giving IPFW a 10-8 lead in the second set as the thunderous crowd erupted in cheers.
Both teams would exchange points, but the 'Dons managed to go on a 6-1 run, making it 18-15 in the second set. IPFW would not relinquish the lead afterwards, winning 25-20 to tie the match. The thrilling second set saw the score tied nine times with five lead changes.
The 'Dons stormed out in the third set, going up 10-5 early on. Both teams would trade the next six points before Penn State went on a four-point run, closing the gap to 14-12. IPFW took advantage of two attack errors by the Nittany Lions, followed with a kill by Saunders to put the set away, 25-21.
IPFW looked determined coming into the fourth set, earning four-straight points giving the 'Dons a 6-3 lead. With their backs against the wall and PSU up 15-13 midway through, the Mastodons erupted with eight-straight points giving the Blue and White a 21-15 lead. IPFW would wrap up the match with consecutive points coming off a kill from Saunders and an ace from Alex Harthaller. The final set saw the score tied 10 times with seven lead changes.
For the match, the Mastodons outscored the Nittany Lions 51-46, while earning an 8-6 edge in aces. IPFW dominated the net with 28 total blocks, while Penn State could only managed nine. The win was IPFW's 11th all-time victory over the 10th-ranked team. Additionally, the victory improves IPFW's record to 3-2 when Penn State is ranked 10th nationally.
The Mastodons return to action when they travel to Sacred Heart on January 24. The match is set to begin at 4 p.m. at the William H. Pitt Center.
