FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Four consecutive goals to bookend halftime led the IPFW men's soccer team to a 4-2 victory over Summit League foe Eastern Illinois on Saturday night. With the win, the Mastodons now sit 1-1-0 in league play, placing them in a tie for fourth place with Western Illinois in the league standings.
After letting up an early first half goal in the18th minute, the Blue and White would respond just 36 seconds later after Jacob Murphy stole the ball at the right side of the Panther goal and placed the ball on the far side. Zach Tom would give the 'Dons a single goal lead entering the half after he found the back of the net in the final minute. Corey Tom took a shot just seconds earlier, which led to a deflection to Zach Tom for the goal.
IPFW continued to apply pressure entering the second half as Spencer Brown received the ball coming off a Thilo Körperich corner in the 46th minute. Already with a two goal lead, the Mastodons would put the match away following a shot from Austin Sibery in the 67th minute. Alex Joneson placed a through ball into the box where Sibery sent the ball to the right post, just getting by the Panther keeper. Eastern Illinois would try to climb back, earning a goal 31 seconds later, but the Mastodons defense held tight to preserve a two goal victory.
Raphael Kotzock dished out four saves, including two consecutive in the 69th minute. After the Panthers received a penalty kick, Kotzock sent it back after diving to his left. Eastern Illinois would take a second shot just seconds later while Kotzock made yet another save.
The Mastodons dominated shots, holding a 20-9 upper hand over the Panthers. The Blue and White earned a 5-4 edge in corner kicks in the scrappy match, which saw seven total yellow cards.
IPFW takes to the road as the Mastodons travel to Cincinnati to face the Bearcats in a non-conference match on Tuesday, October 14 at 7 p.m.
