Late Goal by Romo Leads Mastodons to New School Record
10/11/2015 3:54:00 PM | Women's Soccer
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – A late goal from Gaby Romo in the final 10 minutes of regulation helps lift the IPFW women's soccer team to the longest unbeaten streak in school history. The Mastodons have recorded either a win or a tie in the last six matches (4-0-2), topping the previous record set in consecutive seasons of 2012 and 2013, each going 4-0-1. Additionally, the 2-0-1 start in Summit League play is the best league start in program history.
Coming in the 81st minute, Kelsie Carlson sent a cross deep into the box where Romo got a foot on it to redirect it into the net, just past an Omaha defender.
The Mavericks tested IPFW late in regulation, getting four shots in the final four minutes. Omaha would have a chance to tie the match in the final 65 seconds of action as Hannah Wampler sent the ball wide right. After the Mavs regained control of the ball, a frantic scramble in front of the net ended with Omaha's Kyla Booker seeing her shot turned away on a team save from the 'Dons with one tick left on the clock.
The 'Dons pressed hard in the opening half as Tessa Edwards put the Blue and White up in the 28th minute. From the top of the box, Romo passed the ball to her left where Edwards made the shot from 15 yards out.
Omaha would earn the equalizer early in the second half as Emily Romero made a long cross across the box to Courntey Neville, who managed to squeak the ball past Kiley Dunning to the right post.
Despite the early second half goal, Dunning was solid in net for the Mastodons, earning eight saves, including six in the second half. This was Dunning's fifth match of the season with at least eight saves, giving her 94 total saves on the year. Dunning is averaging 7.23 saves per match, placing her 19th in nationally amongst Division I competitors for most saves per match.
The Mastodons will return to the pitch on Friday, October 16 as they take on the Denver Pioneers at 7 p.m.
