Mastodons Earn Comeback Victory on the Road

OMAHA, Neb. - The IPFW women's volleyball team took down the number two team in the Summit League entering the night as the Mastodons defeated Omaha 3-2 (14-25, 26-24, 17-25, 25-23, 15-6).
Somer Johnson and Madison Jaqua each finished with a double-double in the match. Johnson had a team-high 13 kills to go along with a career-high 17 digs. Jaqua dished out a team-high 44 assists while making 11 digs.
After missing the last four matches, Sarah Heckman returned to the court with authority for the 'Dons putting down 12 kills, three blocks, and hitting .409. Natalie Seiler and Nicole Rightnowar each finished with 10 kills. Seiler had a match-high six blocks while Rightnowar served up a team-high two aces. Olivia Hahn led all players with a match-high 21 digs.
IPFW scored the initial point of the match but it was all Omaha from there as the Mavericks closed out the opening set on a 10-3 run. The Mastodons jumped out to the early advantage in the second set before the Mavs responded to lead 9-7. With the score tied 14-14, Omaha scored six of the next seven points. The 'Dons battled back to tie the score 23-23 and win five of the last six points.
The Mavericks score the first three points of the third set before the Mastodons responded with four straight of their own. Omaha answered back with the next three points as the 'Dons were unable to make another comeback. IPFW trailed by three points early in the fourth set before a four-point run tied the set at 8-8. The two teams fought through nine tie scores down the stretch. Behind 22-21, the Mastodons scored four of the final five points to send the match to a decisive fifth and final set.
Despite dropping the opening point of the fifth set, the 'Dons dominated early on thanks to seven consecutive points. After taking an 11-2 lead, the Mastodons finished off the match scoring three of the last four points to complete the comeback.
IPFW returns to action tomorrow night, October 17, for an 8 p.m. match at South Dakota.
