Mastodons Unable to Gain Advantage in Summit League Opener

OMAHA, Neb. – Despite holing a 7-4 advantage with shots on goal, the IPFW men's soccer team was unable to find the back of the net in a tough 3-0 road loss at Omaha to open Summit League action.
After playing a gritty scoreless 40 minutes to open the match, the Omaha Mavericks found the back of the net off a Mark Moulton penalty kick. The penalty kick would be the lone goal of the opening half despite four total yellow cards between the teams.
Omaha would gain a two goal advantage early in the second half as Fazlo Alihodzic scored in the 58th minute after deflecting a shot from Lalo Gamboa just outside the box.
IPFW would continue to battle, but were unable to gain any advantage in the second half as Omaha would put the match away in the 76th minute with its third goal of the night. The final goal of the match came off a corner kick which saw a header from Jesus Perez get by Raphael Kotzock.
The Blue and White fought hard, outshooting the Mavs 8-6 in the first half, while sharing the spoils 11-11 overall. The 'Dons held an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks, but Omaha's Joseph Ghitis was solid in net, making seven saves for the shutout.
Austin West led the 'Dons with two shots on goal, while Zach Tom, Spencer Brown, Corey Tom, and Thilo Körperich also had shots on goal.
IPFW returns home with a Summit League match against Eastern Illinois on October 10 at 7 p.m.
