IPFW Wins 5th-Straight, Defeats Jacksonville 71-63 In Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Junior Mo Evans scored 18 points to lead IPFW to a 71-63 men's college basketball victory past Jacksonville University of the Atlantic Sun Conference Friday evening during the first of three games in the Spartan Showcase at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, North Carolina. Redshirt-senior Max Landis added 16 points, redshirt-freshman John Konchar had 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds for his second double-double and senior Joe Reed contributed 10 points for the Mastodons (5-1), who won their fifth consecutive contest, and are off to their best start to a season as a Division I program. Darius Dawkins scored a game-high 25 points for the Dolphins (2-3). IPFW will play again on Saturday night, November 28, against event host UNCG of the Southern Conference at the Greensboro Coliseum in North Carolina beginning at 7 p.m.
Jacksonville scored the first five points of the game, including the first of seven three-point field goals by Dawkins. IPFW was within 5-4 at 17:14 after a layup by redshirt-junior Brent Calhoun, but the Dolphins took their largest lead of the contest, 11-4, with 14:44 on the clock following consecutive three-pointers from Marcel White. The Mastodons battled back with a 10-2 run to lead 14-13 at 9:23 on a pair of three throws by Landis. JU went back in front, 19-16, before IPFW used a 13-6 run to take a 29-25 advantage with 3:30 left until halftime – getting two three-pointers from Evans, two baskets from Konchar, including a dunk, and a three-pointer from Landis. Calhoun's dunk closed out the period and put the Mastodons ahead for good, 36-34, at the intermission.
IPFW continued its momentum to start the second half and led 45-38 with 15:40 remaining behind five quick points from Evans. The Mastodons had their largest lead of the night, besides the final margin, at 52-44 with 11:12 left after a layup by Reed, who scored all 10 of his points in the second half. Another three-pointer from Landis made it 55-50 at 9:53, and 1-2 free throws by Reed made it 59-54 at 5:42. Jacksonville climbed back to within 61-60 with 4:03 on the clock, but would get no closer. IPFW outscored the Dolphins 10-3 over the final 3:39, including a shot-clock-beating three-pointer by Landis at 2:27 (66-60), along with 3-4 free throws by Landis over the final 44 seconds to secure the outcome.

IPFW shot 44% (27-62) from the field, including 31% (9-29) on three-pointers and 47% (8-17) at the free throw line. The Mastodons outscored JU 32-12 in the paint, and 16-4 in points off turnovers, forcing 15 by the Dolphins.
