Redshirt-Senior Max Landis Scores Game-High 25 Points, Including Game-Winning Three-Pointer With 11.2-Seconds Remaining
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Redshirt-senior Max Landis/Indianapolis made a game-winning three-point field goal from left of the circle with 11.2-seconds remaining in overtime to lead IPFW to a thrilling 89-86 men's college basketball road victory at Western Michigan University of the Mid-American Conference on Tuesday night at University Arena in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Landis finished with a game-high 25 points (22 after halftime) for the Mastodons (10-4), who have matched the school's best start to a season as a Division I program. Tucker Haymond scored 24 points for the host Broncos (5-6). IPFW will break for the Christmas holiday before hosting Oral Roberts University at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne for The Summit League opener on Dec. 30 at 7 p.m.
IPFW and Western Michigan battled closely through 40 minutes of regulation and the five extra minutes of overtime in a contest that featured 13 lead changes and 13 ties. The Broncos led 7-2 early at 16:14, but the Mastodons were within 11-9 at 11:43 after five quick points from junior DeAngelo Stewart/Detroit, Mich., off the bench. WMU used a 16-10 run to lead 27-19 with 3:21 left in the period, but consecutive three-pointers from Landis and junior Mo Evans/Indianapolis and a pair of free throws by senior Michael Calder/Fort Lauderdale, Fla. had IPFW within 29-27 at 1:11. The hosts, however, closed with a pair of their own three-pointers to lead 35-29 at halftime.
IPFW was fast out of the break with an 11-2 run to take a 40-37 lead with 17:10 on the second-half clock, getting three-pointers from redshirt-freshman John Konchar/Chicago, Ill., Landis and Evans, along with a Landis layup. Back-to-back three-pointers from Landis tied it at 48-48 at 13:15, but WMU answered with three more three-pointers to lead 57-50 with 11:08 to play in regulation. The Mastodons responded with a 13-4 run to lead 63-61 at 7:05, getting two big three-pointers from redshirt-sophomore Racine Talla/Dakar, Senegal, off the bench. Three ties and four lead changes later, it was 74-70 in favor of the visitors at 4:06 following consecutive layups from redshirt-junior Brent Calhoun/Indianapolis and Konchar. It was 79-75 at 2:10 after 1-2 free throws by Landis, but the Broncos tied it at 79-79 with under a minute remaining. Landis made it 81-79 with his driving layup with 26.9-seconds, but WMU scored on a baseline jumper from Anthony Avery Jr. with one-second left to force the extra period tied at 81-81.
Western Michigan scored first in OT on a basket from Haymond, but Calhoun followed with two free throws to tie it again at 83-83 with 3:56 left, and Konchar made 1-2 charity tosses for an 84-83 lead at 3:01. Thomas Wilder scored on a three-point play to give the hosts an 86-84 advantage at 2:12, but it would be the last points the Broncos would score. Konchar scored again inside on an offensive rebound basket with 1:19 to go to tie it at 86-86, before Landis would get the game-winner from three-point territory with 11.2-seconds on the clock. WMU missed two three-point attempts and a layup over the final 1:32.
Landis led IPFW with his game-high 25 points, including 6-11 three-pointers. Evans and Konchar each added 16 points for the Mastodons, with Konchar adding a game-high nine rebounds and three steals, while Evans added eight rebounds and a game-high seven assists. Calder had 10 points for the visitors. IPFW shot 48% (30-62) from the field, including 50% (13-26) on three-pointers and 62% (16-26) at the free throw line.
Haymond led Western Michigan with his 24 points, followed by Wilder with 19 points and Kellen McCormick with 15 points, off the bench. WMU shot 42% (27-65) from the field, including 31% (8-26) on three-pointers and 77% (24-31) at the line.
IPFW and Western Michigan were playing for just the second time ever, and the series is now tied at 1-1. The Mastodons are now 8-2 against MAC schools over the past five-plus seasons since 2010-11, including five-straight wins (Miami-twice, Akron, Bowling Green and WMU).
