IPFW Falls At Indiana 90-65 In First-Ever Meeting
12/9/2015 10:34:00 PM | Men's Basketball
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Kevin Yogi Ferrell scored a game and career-high 38 points to lead Indiana University (7-3) of the Big Ten Conference to a 90-65 men's college basketball victory past IPFW Wednesday night at Assembly Hall in Bloomington. Junior Mo Evans/Indianapolis scored 21 points for the visiting Mastodons (7-4), who led early before trailing 48-34 at halftime in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. IPFW will play again on Saturday afternoon, December 12, hosting Austin Peay University of the Ohio Valley Conference at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne beginning at 2:30 p.m.
IPFW took an early 4-0 advantage at 18:42 after a pair of quick baskets inside from redshirt-junior Brent Calhoun/Indianapolis. The Mastodons led 7-4 at 17:45 following an old-fashioned three-point play by redshirt-freshman John Konchar/Chicago, Ill., and were up 12-10 after a jumper and three-point field goal from Evans, the latter at 15:17. Konchar gave IPFW its last lead of the contest with 11:43 left in the period, following another conventional three-point play. IU answered with a 12-4 run to lead 29-22 at 8:57, getting six points from Farrell. Another three-pointer by Evans had the Mastodons within 31-27 at 7:23, but the Hoosiers used a 13-2 run to lead 44-29 with 3:55 on the first-half clock, as Ferrell added five more points. IU led 48-34 at the intermission, as Ferrell (17) and Evans (15) led their respective teams.
IPFW battled out of the break and closed to within 56-44 at 16:36 after a layup by Konchar that followed a three-pointer from senior Joe Reed/Greenwood, a layup by redshirt-senior Max Landis/Indianapolis and another three-pointer from Evans. IU, however, extended its lead to 69-46 at 11:04 with another 13-2 run, but the Mastodons again fought back and pulled to within 74-60 with 7:12 left to play following another layup by Konchar. Farrell, though, scored 10 of the Hoosiers' final 16 points, finishing the period with 21 points, toward the final margin.
Evans led IPFW with his team-high 21 points, adding four assists and three steals. Konchar added 14 points, eight rebounds and three steals for the Mastodons, followed by Landis with 11 points and four assists. IPFW shot 35% (23-66) from the field, including 32% (8-25) on three-pointers and 58% (11-19) at the free throw line. The Mastodons did outscore IU 20-15 in points off turnovers, forcing 17 miscues by the Hoosiers.
Farrell led Indiana with his 38 points, making 12-18 field goals, including 4-8 three-pointers and 10-10 free throws, adding a game-high five assists. Robert Johnson added 16 points for the Hoosiers, making 5-5 three-pointers, while Troy Williams had 15 points along with game-highs of 19 rebounds (a career-high, as well) and five blocks, followed by Max Bielfeldt with 11 points, off the bench. IU shot 52% (29-56) from the field, including 41% (9-22) on three-pointers and 77% (23-30) at the line. The bigger Hoosiers outscored IPFW 39-26 in the paint.
Indiana will travel north to Fort Wayne to play at IPFW at Memorial Coliseum next season.
The contest against Austin Peay on Saturday is the second game of a doubleheader with the IPFW women hosting Chicago State at 12 p.m.. It's also the first home game for the Mastodons since November 21. IPFW defeated the Governors, 80-77, on Nov. 18 on the road in Clarksville, Tennessee.
