Tough Night at the Free Throw Line For Mastodons in Loss

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - It was a tough night at the free throw line for the IPFW women's basketball team as the Mastodons fell to in-state rival IUPUI 78-68. The 'Dons are now 8-17 on the season and 2-10 in Summit League play.
For the game, IPFW connected on 9-of-17 (52.9%) of its free throw attempts. The team also finished the night shooting 27-of-62 (43.5%) from the field, including 5-of-16 (31.3%) on 3-point attempts.
Haley Seibert led all players with 22 points on 8-of-19 shooting. The senior guard also had a game-high four assists and three steals. Making her second career start, Kamilah Carter finished with 13 points and tied a season-high with five rebounds. Hillary Moore came a rebound shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.
Mur Hagerman added eight points while Rachel Rinehart scored seven to go along with four rebounds and a pair of assists.
IPFW and IUPUI traded leads in the opening minutes after the Jags scored first. The Mastodons responded with an 8-0 run to take an 11-7 lead five minutes in. After back-to-back buckets by the Jags, the 'Dons responded with a three from Rinehart, and a fast break layup by Carter. IUPUI answered with a seven-point run to regain the lead with 9:15 to play.
The Mastodons made it a short-lived lead for the Jaguars, battling back with an 11-2 advantage. IUPUI tied the game 31-31 with 2:13 left in the half, capping off a 9-0 run. Seibert connected on a three with 32 seconds left, but Jenna Gunn hit a jumper at the buzzer for the Jaguars as the 'Dons led 36-35 at halftime.
To start the second half, the IPFW offense went without a point for the first 3:31 as IUPUI took the lead for good. Moore snapped a 9-0 Jaguar run, but the Mastodons trailed 42-38. Later, an 8-0 Jags advantage pushed the deficit to 12 points as IPFW was down 56-44 with 9:45 to go in the game.
Moore hit her first career 3-pointer at the 8:19 mark to cut the lead to seven, but the Mastodons were held off the scoreboard over the next 3:45, as they were unable make a late comeback.
IPFW goes on the road to face Denver on February 14 at 3 p.m. ET.
