DENVER - Behind a career-high 22 points from Mur Hagerman and 23 points by Rachel Rinehart, the IPFW women's basketball snapped a four-game losing streak, defeating Denver 68-51. The Mastodons improve their record to 9-17 overall on the season and 3-10 in Summit League play.
Hagerman closed out her career-day shooting 6-of-9 from the floor, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. The senior also pulled down five rebounds. Rinehart's game-high 23 points came on 8-of-14 shooting, three of which came from downtown.
Kamilah Carter earned her second straight start for the 'Dons, scoring eight points to go along with five rebounds and four assists. Hillary Moore and Keanna Gary each led the Mastodons with seven rebounds each.
Carter opened the scoring with a jumper at the 18:38 mark, giving IPFW the early lead. After trading baskets, the 'Dons opened up a nine-point lead on the back of a 15-6 run in a 5:40 stretch of play.
Denver chipped away at the Mastodon lead as they held on by two, 28-26, with 3:29 left in the half. IPFW got baskets by Rinehart and Carter, the latter of which came with only seconds remaining, as the 'Dons led 32-26 heading into the locker room.
After Rinehart scored the opening bucket of the second half, defense played a key role for both sides, as neither team scored in a 4:09 stretch. Leading 34-26, the Mastodon offense exploded for a 14-3 run in a stretch of 2:29 to push their lead to 48-29.
Denver responded with 10 straight points, cutting the IPFW lead to nine at the 7:39 mark. Leading by eight, the Mastodon defense held the Pioneer offense scoreless in 3:38 of play, as the 'Dons scored the final six points of the game.
On the afternoon, the Mastodons connected on 23-of-60 (38.3%) of their field goal attempts, including 8-of-18 (44.4%) on three-pointers, and 14-of-18 (77.8%) at the free throw line.
